To add my 2 cents to the original questions:

I use Perl a lot, it is my "go-to" language for many tasks, but I am not
sure what would be good "your purpose" with the language, as you ask,
since it is a subjective question.
Based on your Linux signature, I would assume you some work in Linux.
Perl is very useful in the Linux environment. For a beginner, I would
think that the following easy programs in Perl could be quite useful and
fun:
- send chain customized emails to a list of users using Perl and sendmail,
- with Apache, create a simple password-protected CGI web site for file
sharing (uploads and downloads)

Which country is that? If Linux is used by some people, I believe that
Perl still comes installed by default in the most popular distributions.
