Newbie Question: DBI and MySQL Connection Issues

Hi

I am using DBI to connect to MySQL. However I am
getting the following error:

Couldn't connect to database: Client does not support
authentication protocol requested by server; consider
upgrading MySQL client 

when DBI tries to connect to the database. I've read
about the solution which requires changing the 
password to an old-style password. However I was
wondering if there was a cleaner way to do this.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
