Right, but we then either:

1) Need to live with the performance and (lack of) side-effects tradeoffs
the library designer made

or

2) Need to snag the code and beat it into submission ourselves.

#1 has potential performance issues (and we're in a very
performance-critical segment of the world here) as well as potential
portability issues (libunicode available on the palm?). #2 has licensing
issues.

Once again, I'm not saying we *shouldn't* use libraries, just that we
should be very careful in doing so.
